ED attaches assets worth Rs 7.2 crore of Jacqueline Fernandez in money laundering case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth Rs 7.27 crore of Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez in the money laundering case against conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar . The attached assets include a Rs 7.12 crore fixed deposit and an amount of Rs 15 lakhs that was paid by Sukesh to a scriptwriter on Jacqueline's behalf. The Enforcement Directorate alleges that the conman gave gifts worth Rs 5.71 crore to Jacqueline from the Rs 200-crore, which he allegedly extorted from the family of former Ranbaxy owner Shivinder Singh, who was jailed in 2019 in a money laundering case. The actress also reportedly received a Mini Cooper from the conman, which she later returned. Earlier this year, Sukesh wrote a letter from jail, where he confes

Kangana Ranaut calls Karan Johar 'fading 90s director', compares Amazon Prime Video-Netflix content strategy

Apart from her impeccable performances, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut often grab our attention with her bold and controversial statements. The Manikarnika star, who recently announced that her maiden production  Tiku Weds Sheru will premiere on Amazon Prime Video, took a jibe at Netflix and Karan Johar . Hinting at KJo’s recent party, which he hosted for Netflix’s Global Head of TV, Bela Bajaria, Kangana wrote on her Insta-story, “Data suggests that Amazon Prime Video is doing way better than Netflix in India maybe because they are much more open minded and democratic, when international head visits India they don’t park themselves at a fading 90s director’s infamous party but meet everyone who is contributing to them… Last I heard Netflix head was not able to understand Indian market… Well Indian market is not just one b***hy gossipy nineties director…. There are hundreds of talented people here." The guestlist of Karan Johar's star-studded party included Shah Rukh K

In a world where algorithms determine our playlist, what exactly constructs a classic rock genre?

In #TheMusicThatMadeUs , senior journalist Lakshmi Govindrajan Javeri chronicles the impact that musicians and their art have on our lives, how they mould the industry by rewriting its rules and how they shape us into the people we become: their greatest legacies The recently released Robert Pattison-helmed The Batman flick has seen a resurgence of interest in Nirvana ’s Something in the Way . Although the song itself wasn’t a staple of the band’s concert setlist, making it part of a classically rich soundtrack like The Batman has meant that the song now stands out not just sonically, but also culturally. Popular TikTok-er Ari Elkins as part of his four-part series titled “Oldies You Should Know”, posted the same song in early April. Part of Nirvana’s 1991 mega successful album Nevermind , the song’s mention in the same breath as “oldies” obviously elicited strong opinions for and against the use of the word. This morphed into a greater discussion on what is considered “cla

First Take| Pada, Aquarium, Parallel Mothers — three tepid films in limelight

Not all classics are bound to be loved unanimously. Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron hardly strikes me as a great one for laughs. And Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is as romantic to me a molar surgery. Three recent films, all in the limelight for different reasons, left me…if not cold, then tepid. Kamal K M’s Malayalam film Pada has come into a cornucopia of renown for its recreation of a real-life political incident where four men in the Palakkad district of Kerala held the District Collector hostage in 1996. They were protesting for the right of tribals to their forest land. There were other films that have similarly visited the rights of tribals to their natural habitat in the forest. In Ganesh Vinayakan's Tamil film Thaen a beekeeper Velu (Tharun) leading an idyllic existence with his wife and daughter, suddenly finds his existence turned upside down when his wife falls ill: the herbal medicines just won’t do. She needs to be taken to the city for a cure.

Never Kiss Your Best Friend review: A decent antidote to the self-serious, gritty content of today's digital world

Language: Hindi In a scene from the second season of ZEE5’s Never Kiss Your Best Friend (NKYBF) , Tanie tells her uncle Bittu “ Iss zamane mein khoon se chithiyan nahi likhte ”, in a casual yet restrained moment of profound revelation. How love has changed in our films, in our stories. Bittu, played by the ever-so-charming Jaaved Jaaferi  happily accepts this feedback but it is telling that a woke rom-com can so easily drop truth bombs about the way Indian audiences have evolved alongside the stories they consume. In its first season, NKYBF was a breezy, happily messy rom-com that though flawed and elitist in certain areas (set in London being one), aptly served as an escape route from the grit and grime of OTT’s darkest places. In the second season, there are more first-world problems to be solved, but this time the show does what it was always supposed to do – get lost in the unpredictability of relationships.  In the second season, Tanie, played by the cheerful Anya Singh is d

Runway 34 movie review: Devgn plays Devgn and Bachchan plays Bachchan in a largely bland, briefly suspenseful thriller

Language: Hindi  Runway 34 , the new Hindi film directed by Ajay Devgn , is inspired by true events, as the trailer has already informed us.  It’s an aviation thriller split into two halves. The first focuses on Devgn’s Captain Vikrant Khanna, an airline pilot, and an episode that could have led to tragedy when he landed a flight in Thiruvananthapuram with zero visibility in poor weather. Bachchan enters the picture in the second half as Narayan Vedant, an investigator probing what caused this near-disaster. The segment devoted entirely to Vikrant and his co-pilot, Tanya Albuquerque, in the cockpit and the minutes leading up to the landing are well-directed. The production design, the deft editing and the back and forth between the two primary characters keeps this portion of the narrative consistently engaging. Outside the cockpit though, Runway 34 is marked by generic storytelling, casualness towards its own content and loose ends staring in the face of even a non-expert.  Dev

Shining Girls review: It’s impossible to take your eyes off Elisabeth Moss in Apple TV's riveting true crime series

Language: English Is there anything Elisabeth Moss can’t do? If you’re sitting through eight episodes of S hining Girls , a time-traveling true crime series about a violent serial killer terrorizing young women, the answer is clear: it’s Elisabeth Moss’s world and we’re just living in it. The actor, stars, executive produces, and directs episodes of the Apple TV+ series — adapted from Lauren Beukes’ 2013 bestselling novel — with a sobering intensity delivering in effect, a performance so calculated in its emotional fragility that it rankles. (The remaining directorial duties are divided between Michelle MacLaren and Daina Reid.) Created by Silka Luisa, the TV adaptation admirably deviates from the source material. If the book laid bare the devastation of violence from the perspective of a deranged killer, then the show trains its gaze on using time as a device to expand on how one man’s violent tendencies imprint on the realities of women across generations. Sure, that complicates th

On Irrfan Khan's death anniversary, remembering the actor who lived like a monk

Irrfan was a great actor, and also a good human being. I believe the two should go hand-in-hand, that a good artiste should by nature be a decent human being. But it doesn’t always happen that way. There are many brilliant artists who are vermins of the earth. Irrfan balanced his aesthetic acme with moral equity to match. He never did anything that would compromise his sense of self-worth, never stole roles from other actors, never had an extra-marital affair, never spoke harshly to his staff members when nobody was looking, never made anyone uneasy or uncomfortable with his words. The one thing that bothered him was the lack of commercial success. He didn’t like the label of a ‘serious’ actor which he felt was by its very definition, debilitating. Irrfan was always keen to work in massy films. I remember how hurt and bewildered he used to be by the lack of commercial success at one point in his career. “I see my colleagues do such a good job of marketing themselves. I wonder how th
