Gauging the popularity of international music in India through YouTube, Shazam and Wynk charts

During a panel discussion at the recent virtual edition of Singapore’s All That Matters conference, music industry professionals from India talked about how international acts can break our market. Broadly, they highlighted two routes artists could take: the traditional way —touring consistently to build a fan base, or the more recent phenomenon of having a song go viral on social media platforms. Universal Music’s vice president of brand partnerships Preeti Nayyar, cited DJ Snake, who’s performed across the country multiple times at music festivals, Holi parties and on New Year’s Eve (and also filmed a music video here) as an example of the former. The founder of 9122 Records, Sunil D’Sa, mentioned the success of reggae singers Conkarah and Shaggy’s collaboration 'Banana', which was aided by a TikTok trend , as an example of the latter. Their panel got me thinking about how one gauges the success of international music in a country where – despite the considerable increa

Serious Men movie review: Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s engaging performance fronts an ill-informed take on Dalit life

Language: Hindi (with some Tamil) Ayyan Mani is an assistant to Arvind Acharya, the arrogant director of a government-run scientific research institute in Mumbai. Mani is a Tamilian who moved to Mumbai as a child, which is the explanation he offers for his bad Tamil. The difference in social standing between the protagonist and his boss is not a factor of class alone – Mani (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is Dalit, and Acharya (M Nasser), a fellow Tamilian, is Brahmin. “Moron, imbecile, knobhead” – these are the epithets hurled by those in power at Mani and his ilk, irrespective of how much they try to please. As revenge, the “morons” have come up with the term “serious men” for educated people privileged enough to conduct studies on “ chutiastic ” subjects. Awareness of the oppression that his family has suffered for generations, resentment towards Acharya and a determination to escape his present life in a cramped one-room tenement with his wife Oja and son Adi are all the motivat

Jim Parsons reveals he, his partner Todd Speiwak contracted coronavirus in mid-March

The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons has revealed that he and his husband, producer Todd Spiewak, had contracted the coronavirus in the middle of March. During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon , the actor said their experience "defied the descriptions" of the COVID-19 virus. "Todd and I both had it early on. It was like... the middle of March. We didn't know what it was. We thought we had colds. And then it seemed less likely, and then finally we lost our sense of smell and taste. It defied the descriptions for me. I didn't realise how completely taste and smell could be gone," Parsons told Fallon. The Hollywood actor said losing two senses under lockdown when there is "nothing to do but eat" resulted in "a lot of wasted calories". The Lion King follow-up to be helmed by Moonlight's Barry Jenkins, announces Disney

The Walt Disney Co will make a follow-up to the 2019 live-action The Lion King with Barry Jenkins, the director of the Oscar-winning Moonlight , and the James Baldwin adaptation If Beale Street Could Talk , set to direct. Disney announced plans Tuesday for a kind of prequel to last year’s poorly reviewed but highly popular photorealistic remake. The new Lion King grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide, so a sequel was perhaps always likely. Less expected was a Lion King with Jenkins directing. The film, Disney said, will explore the mythology of The Lion King , including Mufasa’s origin story. “Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said in a statement. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.” See his post This.
