Sivakumarin Sabadham movie review: Refreshing changes save an age-old narrative

Language: Tamil Independent musician turned actor Hip Hop Aadhi’s first ticket to fame was his 2011 single ‘ Clubbula Mabbula ’. The rookie video -- a mobile recording of two youngsters rapping in a radio station -- became a viral hit, even before we knew what that meant. For the uninitiated, 'Clubbula Mabbula' is a song that trashed women who consumed alcohol and partied, branding them as harbingers of cultural doom. Ten years later, his latest directorial Sivakumarin Sabadham has a similar instance. Shruthi (Madhuri) is harassed at a club by rogue men, saying the same things ‘ Clubbula Mabbula ’ did. While a usual Tamil cinema hero would have patronised Shruthi, Sivakumar (Hip Hop Aadhi) speaks of the initial culture shock and the subsequent realisation of his erroneous understanding. “ Avano avalo ellam onnu dhana, adhu arivu varappo ungaluku thaana puriyum . (Whether it is a man or a woman, the rules are the same.)” And further consoled the sobbing heroine saying, “ Nee

"Based on actual events, the historical epic unravels long-held assumptions about France's last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges (Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Driver), two friends turned bitter rivals," the synopsis read. No Time To Die movie review: Daniel Craig’s sloppy, sentimental farewell

Language: English Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time To Die is heavy-handed from the first scene, where James Bond (Daniel Craig) and his love-interest, Madeline (Léa Seydoux) glide across Europe like the protagonists in an Imtiaz Ali movie. Except there’s no song playing in the background which underlines their ‘free spirit’ ways. As they enter (what looks like) a town in Italy, she teases him for looking over his shoulder. He denies it, and says something profound about the ‘past’. We see locals burning tiny pieces of paper, which we’re told are past regrets and secrets, as a ritual. Craig’s Bond has been marinating in distrust and trauma since that climactic betrayal in Casino Royale , something that has arguably worked splendidly for the franchise, rooting it in real-world opacity. And to Craig’s credit, he embodies the stiff upper-lipped Mi6 agent to perfection, instead of being the one firing zingers in every scene. Which is why it’s shocking that the No Time To Die makers saddle h

Sony Music India, which released the soundtrack, celebrated the achievement  saying  that it’s “fascinating to see how music transcends all geographic and language barriers”. Except that while there’s no doubt the soundtrack i

Radhika Madan, Sunny Kaushal on reintroducing Shiddat wala pyaar to the new generation

Radhika Madan has been fairly busy during the pandemic as she shot two of her recently released Netflix originals —  Feels Like Ishq  and  Spotlight  in the Ray anthology — when the COVID-induced lockdown was relaxed after the first phase. Madan, who was seen as a spunky village girl in her debut film, Vishal Bhardwaj-directed  Pataakha , has been pretty versatile in her choice so far, whether it was the role of martial-arts expert Supri in the quirky  Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota ,  or the schoolgirl with a mind of her own in  Angrezi Medium .  Recently, her act as Didi  in the short film  Spotlight  also got considerable praise. And what has added to her excitement is the upcoming romantic  Shiddat ,  that   also stars Sunny Kaushal, Mohit Raina, and Diana Penty in pivotal roles. “I have been doing films like  Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, Pataakha , but I always wanted to do a romantic drama. So when someone came with a film that involves getting passionate in love with that ' rooh-wala&

Why Neecha Nagar, Chetan Anand's directorial debut, remains relevant 75 years on

For a nation that loves watching films so much, our indifference to film restoration is rather bewildering and unfathomable. The reason perhaps lies in its times of origin when our movies were largely seen as a fanciful escape, a technological version of ‘Nautanki’ maybe, despite having caught the nation’s fancy — and hence were not perceived as ‘works of art,’ negating the need for any preservation. While over 80 percent of our films from 1931-1950 stand today to be either lost or destroyed, the remaining ones survive in barely presentable conditions — a tragedy that is particularly ironic in the case of the 1946 film Neecha Nagar , one of those remaining films of its times, the one that captured a grim socio-political reality of its times, and also continues to be relevant even 75 years after its release (It was the first Indian film to premiere at Cannes, on this day, 29 September, in 1946). Neecha Nagar, which also marked the directorial debut of Chetan Anand (elder brother o

Britney Vs Spears on Netflix offers no new insight, instead capitalises on singer's court case

Language: English How many documentaries on Britney Spears is too many documentaries? As the popstar’s conservatorship battles continue, there have been a series of non-fiction films that have chronicled the feeding frenzy that has surrounded Spears for decades. Most revolve around the conservatorship that grants her father Jamie the legal right to oversee and control almost all aspects of her life, whether personal or business. It all started in February this year with the New York Times documentary, Framing Britney Spears . Preceded by months of media speculation and the growing chant of #FreeBritney, the Emmy-nominated film’s impact was seismic. Spears’s story had been told before and perhaps most comprehensively in the Rolling Stone cover story, The Tragedy of Britney Spears . What Framing Britney Spears benefited from though, was an audience that revisited the threads of her life and career through the post #MeToo lens. Then came BBC’s Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a

Nikkhil Advani on making shows as diverse as The Empire and Mumbai Diaries 26/11

A few years ago, director-producer Nikkhil Advani noticed that his internal sleep clock was broken. “Like my good friend Akshay Kumar, I’d go to sleep by 9:30 PM but wake up by 2 AM. On most days, I can’t go back to sleep so I end up reading until about 6 AM when I really start my day,” he says. It is this sleep deprivation that he credits for being able to wear multiple hats and work on the many projects that his production company Emmay Entertainment is involved in. This year alone, Emmay has produced the films Indoo Ki Jawani, Sardar Ka Grandson , and Bell Bottom, the anthology series Unpaused , and two web shows – The Empire and Mumbai Diaries 26/11 . Coming up next are Satyameva Jayate 2 with John Abraham, and Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway , that has just wrapped up a schedule in Estonia, with Rani Mukerji in the lead. In the OTT space, there is Rocket Boys on SonyLIV, which is based on the life of Indian nuclear physicists Homi Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai, and an untitled show wi
